Why is Djurs Sommerland So Much Fun?
Djurs Sommerland is one of those theme parks that people seem to instantly connect with. Every time we visit the Danish theme park on the Scandinavia & Germany Tour, the whole group leaves with huge smiles, great energy and the same opinion:
Djurs Sommerland is just so much fun!
Things are only going to get better in 2027, when Djurs Sommerland opens its new Intamin single-rail roller coaster, adding another major attraction to an already brilliant line-up of rides.
But it isn't necessarily the roller coasters that make us love Djurs Sommerland so much.
There is a very good selection of coasters and rides, but you might not necessarily leave saying that one of them is the best roller coaster you have ever ridden. Instead, Djurs Sommerland is packed with attractions that are incredibly re-rideable, making it very easy to jump straight back on and ride again and again.
And perhaps that is part of the secret. When walking past any of the park's major attractions, if someone mentions they want to go again, it is rare to find someone in the group who would choose to skip it.
Djurs Sommerland has a varied roller coaster line-up, with several major rides from Intamin including Piraten, Juvelen and DrageKongen.
Piraten – Intamin Mega-Lite
Piraten is an Intamin Mega-Lite and delivers far more airtime than you might expect from looking at it.
Although relatively small, it packs an incredible amount into its layout. The airtime comes thick and fast, the pacing is brilliant and it is incredibly easy to get off and immediately want another go.
The experience starts before you have even left the station, with staff getting into the pirate theme and shouting at riders, although sometimes we have absolutely no idea what they are saying! But this adds to the atmosphere and increases the fun before you have even set off towards the lift hill.
Juvelen – Intamin Quad-Bike Coaster
The theming around Juvelen, Djurs Sommerland's Intamin quad-bike coaster, is gorgeous, with an Aztec-inspired setting.
The coaster packs considerably more intensity than you might initially expect from a family coaster, while still being accessible enough to appeal to a huge range of visitors.
That makes Juvelen one of those rare roller coasters that can please almost everyone, from hardened coaster enthusiasts to families and friends simply looking for a fun ride together.
DrageKongen – Family Inverted Coaster
DrageKongen continues the trend.
For a family inverted roller coaster, it strikes a fantastic balance. It isn't too intense, but there are enough forces, speed and interesting elements throughout the layout to keep everyone entertained.
That is something Djurs Sommerland does exceptionally well. Its roller coasters don't have to be enormous record-breakers to be fun. Piraten, Juvelen and DrageKongen are all extremely re-rideable, and you will probably find yourself riding them several times during a visit.
Flat Rides at Djurs Sommerland
Djurs Sommerland doesn't rely solely on its roller coasters. There is also a great selection of flat rides, including a brilliantly themed drop tower in the Mexican area.
But the standout for us is Tigeren, the enormous Intamin Gyro Swing.
This might genuinely be one of the best versions of this ride type we have experienced. If you are familiar with similar giant pendulum rides such as Loki at Liseberg or Aviktis at Blackpool Pleasure Beach Resort, you will know what to expect, but the setting here is phenomenal, with a pond underneath you as you swing by!
However, there is one flat ride that is particularly unique and has one of the best soundtracks for a ride… ever!
Solguden!
This flat ride has on-board audio featuring one of the catchiest theme park songs we have ever heard. Do not skip this! What makes the ride even more fun is the addition of water cannons shooting at you in time with the words of the song.
And speaking of water rides…
Water Rides at Djurs Sommerland
The water rides at Djurs Sommerland is another highlight.
Skatteøen is the park's Mack Rides water coaster, combining a traditional roller coaster layout with a suitably wet finale.
Add an excellent log flume and rapids ride into the mix and there are plenty of opportunities to get soaked during your day at Djurs Sommerland.
Djurs Sommerland Makes You Feel Like a Kid Again
This is where we start getting closer to answering why Djurs Sommerland is so much fun. Something about this park makes us all feel like kids again.
The theming is excellent without ever making the park feel too serious. Take Phantasialand as an example. It is one of the best themed parks in the world, but its themed lands are much more serious and immersive in their approach, and that works perfectly for them.
Djurs Sommerland feels completely different.
It almost feels like someone was playing RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 when designing the park! These are the sorts of themes you would find in the game, and at Djurs Sommerland you get pirates, the Wild West, Asia, Mexico, dinosaurs, a farmyard and more, all packed into one theme park.
And somehow, it works.
You Don't Have to Work Hard to Have Fun
Perhaps the biggest reason we love Djurs Sommerland is that you don't have to work hard to have a good day here.
The fun feels effortless.
Some of Europe's greatest theme parks, including places such as Phantasialand and Europa-Park, can almost feel overwhelming because there is so much that you need to see and do.
Djurs Sommerland feels different.
There is plenty to do, but there isn't the same pressure to constantly rush towards the next attraction.
And then there are the trampolines.
Lots and lots of trampolines.
These have become a surprisingly big hit whenever we visit. You can have a group of adults who have travelled across Europe to ride roller coasters, and suddenly everyone is bouncing around on trampolines like they are eight years old again.
That sums up Djurs Sommerland remarkably well.
You can ride a roller coaster. Jump on a trampoline. Get soaked on a water ride. Sit down and watch the world go by. Explore another themed area. Or, during the summer, spend some time in the water park.
And somehow it all just works.
Djurs Sommerland is so much fun, and it isn't one particular roller coaster that makes it special. It isn't one spectacular themed area and it isn't one standout attraction.
It is the complete package.
Djurs Sommerland has something for almost everyone and brings it together in a theme park that is beautifully maintained, well operated and staffed by people who genuinely add to the experience.
The rides are re-rideable. The atmosphere is relaxed. There are things to do everywhere you look. And most importantly, the park never seems to take itself too seriously.
Every time Coaster Breaks visits Djurs Sommerland, we leave having had a fantastic day.
It is simply a really, really fun theme park and one of our favourite theme parks in Denmark.
And with a brand-new Intamin single-rail roller coaster coming to Djurs Sommerland in 2027, one of Denmark's best theme parks is about to become even more exciting.
